Hello, I’m Jane Alexander. Not the actress / artist / journalist – I’m the other Jane Alexander: novelist and short story writer. My debut novel The Last Treasure Hunt is published by Saraband Books; and here’s a taster of some of my recent short fiction.
I’ve always loved stories: when I was eight, I thought I would grow up to write and draw serials for Bunty comic. Somehow that dream job didn’t happen, though I studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and then a decade later completed an M.Phil in creative writing at Glasgow University (so if Bunty is ever resurrected I’ll be ideally qualified). Fast-forward another ten years, and I’m back at school again again: this time I’m working on a creative writing PhD, writing a collection of short stories exploring the technological uncanny.
In between and alongside my stints as a student, I’ve worked variously as an illustrator, designer and arts marketeer, and taught creative writing at all levels and with all kinds of groups: from international students to local elderly people, from prison officers to learners recovering from substance misuse. Originally from Aberdeen, I’m now based in Edinburgh – the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature – where I’ve lived for most of the last twenty years.
